Shirahama: Where 1,300 Years of Hot‑Spring Heritage
Meet Contemporary Wellness
Located just 70 minutes by air from Tokyo Haneda Airport and 150 minutes by limited express from Osaka, Shirahama Onsen sits on the Kii Peninsula, a region with more than 1,300 years of history.
From the eras of the Nihon Shoki and Manyōshū, members of the imperial family and influential clans visited this area to enjoy its natural hot springs and scenic coastline.
The Kii Peninsula as a whole is known as a spiritual landscape reflecting centuries of Japanese belief. The Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes—shaped by Japan’s unique blend of Shinto and Buddhist traditions and its reverence for nature—are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From emperors to common travelers, people across all walks of life have long been drawn to the quiet mystique of this region.
At the peninsula’s edge, surrounded by the striking scenery of Nanki‑Shirahama Geopark and Yoshino‑Kumano National Park, Shirahama Onsen offers both sweeping coastal views and its iconic white‑sand beach. Here, wrapped in a grand historical narrative and the beauty of the landscape, you can settle into moments of deep and unhurried relaxation.

Shirahama Onsen: A Beachside Destination
Rooted in Japanese Tradition
Known since the Asuka and Nara periods as Muro no Yu and Ki no Nuruyu, Shirahama Onsen is counted alongside Dōgo and Arima as one of Japan’s three oldest hot‑spring traditions. Further inland lie the three sacred sites of Kōyasan, Yoshino–Ōmine, and the Kumano Sanzan—together designated as the UNESCO World Heritage “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.”
Across the Kii Peninsula, the landscape reflects what has long been a spiritual homeland for the Japanese people. The tradition of pilgrimage, once the primary reason for travel, is etched into its dramatic scenery.
After the eras of modernization and rapid economic growth, Shirahama Onsen today is also known as a coastal resort. Terraces and infinity baths at luxury hotels overlook the white sands of Shirarahama, offering a restorative stay by the sea. Yet with only a short exploration, visitors can still encounter the deeper layers of Japanese spiritual culture—cliffside hot springs, ancient paths leading toward sacred sites, and traces of a 1,300‑year history that remain quietly present.
Shirahama Onsen is a place where two contrasting qualities coexist: the ease of a beach resort and the depth of Japanese tradition. We invite you to experience both sides of this remarkable destination.

DAY 1 HIGHLIGHT
Shirahama Wellness Stay
Your journey into Shirahama Onsen and the Kii Peninsula begins with a visit to Yama Shrine, known as the guardian shrine of the hot springs. Afterwards, continue to Saki no Yu, a seaside bath that preserves the atmosphere of 1,300 years ago, offering a setting where the hot spring blends directly with the vast Pacific Ocean.
Take in the dramatic scenery of the Nanki‑Shirahama Geopark—Sandanbeki Cliffs, Senjojiki, and Engetsu Island—followed by a lunch that highlights the terroir of Kishu ume plum.
In the afternoon, relax in an infinity bath overlooking the Pacific from a hilltop hotel. As evening falls, enjoy the illuminated Shirarahama Beach and a quiet bar time by the sea. Settle into the full experience of a Shirarahama wellness stay.
DAY 2 HIGHLIGHT
The Ōhechi Trail of the Kumano Kodo:
Historic Pilgrimage Routes of Japan
A path where three religious traditions once coexisted and where nature and Japanese culture intersect—the World Heritage “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.” One of these routes, the Ōhechi Trail begins in Shirahama’s Tonda area at Sōdōji, a Zen temple, and the historic ascent of Tondazaka.
Climb the stone steps that preserve the atmosphere of Japan’s ancient landscapes, and follow the former training paths over steep passes to reach sweeping coastal views. Walking this quiet route offers time to reflect, accompanied only by the stillness of the old pilgrimage road.
Crossing the river by boat at Ago-no-Watashi, watching the opposite shore draw near, feels like slipping back into an earlier Japan. Spend a half day with a Kishu storyteller guide, who interprets the nature, history, and culture of the Kumano Kodo.
