An Island of Sacred Sumo and Enduring Nature Reverence

On a journey through Okinoshima, you encounter two defining narratives: its sacred sumo tradition and its long‑standing reverence for nature.
Within the grounds of Mizuwakasu Jinja stands a distinguished sumo ring—the stage for Oki Classical Sumo, where district representatives, the Yakurikishi, devote themselves fully in this time‑honored ritual.
The site is also known as a filming location for the movie Kon‑Shin.

At the Goka Sōseikan, you can explore the history of Oki Classical Sumo, observe real training at a local sumo dojo, and even step onto the ring yourself. At Tamawakasu no Mikoto Shrine, the two‑thousand‑year‑old Yaosugi cedar towers overhead, while the sacred Dangyō Falls offers a powerful reminder of how islanders have long sensed and honored the divine within nature.

Local sake, island‑grown ingredients, and hidden scenic spots complete this two‑night, three‑day journey—an experience that distills the very essence of Oki.
