Event Report: The 32nd Women-Only Sumo Tournament Held in Fukushima Town, Hokkaido
The 32nd Women-Only Sumo Tournament was held in Fukushima Town, Hokkaido (organized by the Fukushima Town Tourism Association).
A total of 64 women from across Japan participated, and approximately 2,000 visitors from both Japan and overseas attended, making it a highly successful and lively event.

The Women-Only Sumo Tournament is an annual competition held in early May on Mother’s Day, exclusively for female participants. Now in its 36th year, it is a long-standing and traditional event. As a town that produced two Yokozuna—Chiyonoyama and Chiyonofuji—it is a special occasion unique to Fukushima Town, attracting not only participants but also spectators from all over Japan and abroad.
Various efforts are made to keep the audience engaged, such as lively announcements of competitor introductions and winning techniques, ensuring excitement throughout the venue.
The event is widely loved, with some people traveling long distances to see it, while others come prepared to cheer on competitors with original T-shirts and hand fans.
As sumo aims to become an Olympic sport, increasing female participation will become ever more important. This event, as a foundational part of that movement, holds a highly significant role. The enthusiasm of Fukushima Town will continue to be shared with sumo-related cities and towns across the country.

The World-Connecting Sumo Promotion Council will continue to support sumo events throughout Japan.
